VIA design architects, pc completed a design study and cost evaluation for Chesapeake Bay Academy, a private school in Virginia Beach, on three separate areas of their existing school building.
The first area of study was the Commons, which is used as a lunch room, small performance area, and event space. The ultimate goal was to turn the existing small platform into a grand stage for theater productions and musical performances. The second area of study was the existing kitchen that is connected to the Commons where a new layout was necessary to house activities for the students and catering for events. An outdoor patio was the third area of study. This space receives full sun during school hours, so shade sails were utilized to provide shading. Lightweight outdoor café tables and seating were provided in order to allow for flexibility in function.
After receiving the original study, funds were raised by the Academy, and VIA design architects was commissioned to move forward with the Commons Stage. Construction was on a tight deadline, starting over the summer and finishing just in time for Founder's Day in October. Chesapeake Bay Academy was able to celebrate it's 25th anniversary with the grand opening of their new stage.
