Client: d'ART Center

14,400 sf :: $1.25 million
2008 AIAHR Design Achievement for Interiors
2006 HRACRE First Honor in Best Interior

This project is the design of the Interior spaces for the new
location for the d’Art Center and its 40 individual artsts within
the recently renovatated Selden Arcade in downtown Norfolk.
“The Center is an environment where working artist are a part
of an interactive arts community that engages the public
through the experience(s) of art and the creative process.”
The Center aims to brings artistic experiences and education to
the public. The avaliable location was presented as a split
space with the untouchable arcade serving as the physical
divider. In order to programatically weave the d’Art Center into
the divided space surrounding the historical center arcade,
corridors were incorporated with corresponding connections
on either side of the arcade. Though the true connection is
visual, these threaded pathways seem to physically connect
and continue across the open arcade leading the partron
between six galleries. The uncommon angles/entrances create
visual interest, drawings the passerby into the experience
which immediatelypresent itself in the corridors that have also
been designed as public displays areas. Educational spaces, a
clay and ceramics workroom, a large kiln room, and a darkroom
also exist within the Center serving community outreach
programs and generating additional revenue for d’Art.
