Hampton Roads Agricultural Research + Extension Center
Client: Virginia Tech (VPI+SU)

256,000 sf Master Plan / 8,000 af Building #1

Commissioned to Master Plan the thirteen acre Agricultural/
Research property, VIA design architects, pc. put forth a long
range plan to develop the campus for laboratory research,
educational demonstration, distance learning and work force
development speculative space. Intended to become a part
of the future corporate educational cooperative, the new four
(4) building complex is designed to fit into the existing
building campus by taking design cues from the existing
agricultural structures such as masonry detailing, large roof
overhangs with bracket supports, and clean simple lines.
Implementation of buidling No. 1, the extension center is a
focal point of this new campus entry and creates a new
identity for VPI’s Virginia Beach research facility. It is an
addition to an existing 1950’s 2-story classroom building and
incorporates distance learning space, intense/full-service
laboratories, preparation rooms and facility space. Building
systems tie-in, code upgrades, ADA accessibility and
renovations to the existing building were included as a part
of the building No. 1 scope and development.
