Eastern Shore Seawater Lab - Wachapreague
Client: Virginia Institute of Marine Science

8,000 sf :: $2 million

Currently in the planning stages, this project promises to be an
exercise in innovation. It includes the planning and design of an
approximately 8,000 sf seawater laboratory at the VIMS
campus in Wachapreague on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

The site is an old oyster shell deposit and generally flat with an
average grade elevation of approximately 5.5 - 6.0. Flood zone
rating is high hazard, VE - 11+12. The site is bound on the west
by Atlantic Street and by Finney's Creek on the remaining sides.
The water edges are fully bulkheaded. Seawater is pumped
into the lab buildings from the creek and returned to the creek.

The objective of this project is to replace the aging metal
buildings currently located on the 1/2 acre site with a new flood
proof structure to house the seawater laboratory and support
functions.
