Shelton Park Elementary
Client: Virginia Beach City Public Schools
58,000 sf existing / 33,000 sf new :: $6 million
Shelton Park Elementary was an existing 55-year-old, 58,000SF
elementary school that required extensive modernizations and
additions to function for Virginia Beach Public Schools for the
next 30+ years. Occupancy during construction was a
mandate and the program needs exceeded budget allowances.
The new scope included 2 additions of 33,000SF to support
additional classrooms,
a new administrative suite, a new media
center and expansion to the kitchen services area of the
building. The existing building was completely reprogrammed
and renovated to included window replacement, upgrades to
all
interior spaces and reconfiguration of site circulation to
support the additions.
Separate from the written requirements
were those silent issues such as HAZMAT abatement, full
ADA compliance, comprehensive building code upgrades to
include fire protection, and HVAC/electrical modernization. Our
initial approach to the design problem at hand began with the
study of an intricate phasing plan concept to understand and
map the logistics of occupancy. Balancing the budget was the
second part of our focus. The scope of work was prioritized
and additive alternates were established as a fail safe method
to allow the owner to reach his/her goals of program needs
and budget restrictions. |
