Hampton River - Hampton, Virginia
Marina Pavilion
Water born structures are unique in every way; being totally exposed on all six (6) sides sets the stage for an aesthetic and structural challenge. This particular pavilion will be the last one of 175 "type permitting" in the state of Virginia by VMRC (Virginia Marine Resources Commission). Its construction is grandfathered since it is replacing an existing dilapidated building within the same marina harbor.
The task at hand was to develop the required programmed support spaces as minimally as possible to provide a light weight, airy structure that would not impede views to support the visual forms already present on the Hampton River such as the iconic Hampton Air and Space Museum.
Gently curved mahogany timber beams, galvalume™ metal roofing, and open frame post and beam detailing provide an airy, "floating-like" appearance for the overall platform and structure. The high integrity materials of mahogany, stainless steel connections, fasteners, and cabling are clues to the weather exposure and conditions this pavilion will have to withstand.
